Frenching of Tobacco Distinguished from Thallium Toxicity by Spectrographic

چکیده

Several theories as to the cause of tobacco frenching have been proposed, but each in its turn has been found to be erroneous. Kecently, it has been postulated that frenching is probably a symptom of thallium toxicity. Since the demonstration of the presence of thallium in frenched tobacco tissue in toxic amounts or its absence is essential to an evaluation of the thalhum-toxicity theory, and the quantity of thallium necessary to produce thalhum toxicity under experimental conditions is too minute to be detected by ordinary chemical methods, this theory at first seemed impossible to prove or disprove. However, since spectrographic analysis has been shown by a number of investigators {9, 10, 16y to be applicable to the determination of minute quantities of minerals in plant tissues, the spectrographic method seemed to be applicable to the evaluation of the thallium-toxicity theory. Accordingly, a cooperative study was undertaken in 1937 between the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and the Physics Department of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute to determine by spectrographic analysis whether there is any relationship between frenching and thalhum toxicity of tobacco. Preliminary reports on this study have been made by the authors.^

Soil Temperature as a Factor in the Frenching of Tobacco (nicotiana Tabacum L.).

During a study of the effect of soil temperature on the development of a tobacco mosaic, frenching was observed on the plants at the higher soil temperatures. Since this is apparently the first time, JONES (3), that soil temperature has been recognized as a factor in inducing frenching of tobacco, Nicotiana Tabacum L., it seemed important that the technique be developed as a possible means of d...

Accumulation of Free Amino Acids as a Chemical Basis for Morphological Symptoms in Tobacco Manifesting Frenching and Mineral Deficiency Symptoms.

The chemical mechanism whereby plants respond to modifications in environment resulting in alterations in morphology has on the whole remained obscure. However, whatever the cause, it is clear that each change in environment may result in the appearance of a whole aggregate of symptoms characteristically specific for each condition. No change in environment can be said to cause only a single sy...

The conditions that cause the development of symptoms of frenching in tobacco {Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants are unknown. Nevertheless soil from fields of severely frenched plants was often incapable of producing this morphological abnormality in the greenhouse. Abnormal plants transplanted ...
